Mongolian Barbeque

970 W Foothill Blvd
Claremont, CA

The name says it all. It is located west of the Claremont Colleges. This is one of the famous Mongolian Barbeque restaurants with a circular flat grill.

The menu is really simple but it doesn't mean there is a small choice of food. Basically you either get one bowl of 'Mongollian Barbeque' or 'all you can eat Mongolian Barbeque'. The price difference is about a dollar. Added on to that are some basic Mongolian sides orders which consists of rice, soup, flat bread and some fried stuff (I'm not sure what they are called). I usually don't even lay hands on the side dishes except the rice because they are really bland and don't taste like anything. The Mongolian Barbeque itself is self serve and you can pick the meat and vegetables that goes in it. They have a wide variety of meat, vegetables, and different sauces. They have like 5 different sauce material available and there is a chart that explains how to make varying levels of spicyness for your dish. I guess it's pretty fun to make your own sauce. In terms of the pricing it usually comes out more then $10 per person. But you can get a meal less then $10 if you get the non all you can eat dish and no drink.

One thing to note is that they have special drinks such as Shirley Temples.

My Opinion: I don't like the atmosphere there. The lighting is dim and I remember it being warm last time I went. The taste of the food is okay. I would go there a couple times a semester.

Bangkok Blue

2300 Foothill Blvd
La Verne, CA

As you might have inferred from the name, Bangkok Blue is a Thai food restaurant. It is located on Foothill Boulevard, a short drive away from the Claremont Colleges. Different from a certain more popular Thai food restaurant (read: Mix Bowl), Bangkok Blue is more original and less greasy. The restaurant itself is relatively small but is tastefully decorated with Thai handicrafts, which brings a nice, oriental atmosphere to it.

My favourite dishes are their curries (well, in general, I like curry). For those who are vegetarians, you always have the option of substituting meat with tofu or vegetables. Other dishes and beverages such as Thai salads, pad thai, satay, Thai ice tea, etc. are also very tasty and are all available at reasonable prices. If you are eating one dish alone for a lunch, expect to spend $8 or more. If you are looking to order a variety of dishes (family style, in a larger group), then expect to spend more.

Guasalmex

150 W. Holt Ave.
Pomona, CA, 91768
(909) 623-1107

Guasalmex serves Guatemalan, Salvadorian, and Mexican food. I ordered from the Salvadorian panel of the menu, something called pupusas, which were delicious. The restaurant has fresh fruit smoothy type drinks, and the menu was quite large. Chips were provided with salsa (quite spicy and tasty) and it was suggested to order the black bean sauce for the chips as well. The dish I ordered was a midpriced meal, but includes rice, beans, fried plantains (or chicken), and the pupusa, quite a lot of food. There is parking in the back, and a door you can enter from in the back as well. Beware of the slow service and you’ll have to get the waiter/waitress to give you the check as they are in no rush. Do not go if you’re in a hurry, it’s the wrong kind of place.

El Milagrito

521 E. Woodlawn Ave.
San Antonio, TX 78212

El Milagrito is a very homey and welcoming small restaurant, located a short walk from Trinity University where I'm spending this summer. This place is truly great since it serves very tasty and inexpensive original Mexican food. On average, I spend $5 for one full meal, including tip and tax.

There is a very wide selection of breakfast and lunch menus–both are served all day long–from breakfast tacos and pancakes to lunch platters, you name it. Their tortillas are especially tasty. There are a very wide selection of fillings for your tacos and fajitas: chicken, pork, beef, and many others, including one that I have yet to try–cow tongue. However, you shouldn't be planning to order burritos for your lunch since they do not serve any.

El Milagrito is open from 6am to 3pm everyday, and is especially crowded during lunch hours from 11am to 1pm.

Patty’s

1332 N Towne Ave
Claremont, CA 91711
(909) 625-9160

Patty's is an inexpensive mexican restaurant (hole-in-the-wall) close to Harvey Mudd, popular by many. The building itself has very few tables, so it's usually in your best interest to take it and leave. The cuisine is traditional mexican food and flavored by the hot sauce, which is delicious. The tortillas are all homemade, and the selections for your burrito are many including: chicken, pork, beef, beans, cheese, vegetables, etc. You can choose just what you want, and other selection; and it's all made fresh as you wait.

Beware: at times the restaurant is really busy and the line spills out the door, and waiting could take around 30 minutes.
